Cultivation

Cultivation is an agricultural term used when discussing the growth of trees or plants. It is defined as a highly developed state of perfection, refinement, or the process of fostering the growth of something. This term may also be used when analyzing our personal spiritual growth. the principle of cultivating is to grow something that produces.

When applying the process of cultivation to our spiritual walk, we must always begin with a mindset of intentionality. Being intentional allows us to keep our eyes on the goal of working towards something. Our mind set should begin with what is stated in Colossians 3:1-3

Colossians 3:1-3

If ye then be risen, with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

set your affection on things above, not on things in the earth.

for ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:5 goes on to say “mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth.”

instructing us even deeper is verse 10: “to be renewed in the knowledge of our creator.”

Colossians 3:10

and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.

We must view and evaluate everything from an eternal heavenly perspective. When we do this, we have started the process of cultivation which prepares our heart for the spiritual cultivation of the Holy Spirit to produce His fruit within us.

When we are intentional about seeking the things of God and our affection is towards heavenly things, we become dead to self. Thus, allowing the Spirit to cultivate the knowledge of God into our everyday walk of life.
